ABOUT THE ASAC

The Arts and Sciences Advising Center (ASAC) is a centralized advising office that provides developmental academic advising and educational assistance to undergraduate and graduate students and faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is staffed by professional academic advisors who are available on a drop-in basis and for scheduled appointments.

MISSION

Our mission is to help students create the college experience they desire and navigate the university. We accomplish this by:

  • Welcoming new students to the SU community
  • Listening to students, affirming their experiences, and being available for support when needed
  • Celebrating good news and milestones with students
  • Supporting students through personal and academic difficulties
  • Sharing important information
  • Guiding students and uplifting them as they:
    • Discover how they can work towards their goals and aspirations
    • Discern what’s important to them, what brings them joy, and what’s challenging
    • Advocate for what they need and ask for help from their supporters, guardians, or professors
    • Cultivate their voice and become forces for good in their communities

A key part of our mission is to help students develop their professional goals. We promote this by:

  • Guiding students to connect their previous work and class experiences to their desired career skillset
  • Building confidence in students’ ability to reach out to people (including SU alumni and other community members) to learn more about their industries of interest
  • Facilitating internship opportunities for students
  • Providing tools to help students on their professional journey

Another key component of our mission is to support the relationships that faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) foster with students. We advance that mission by:

  • Providing a listening ear to CAS faculty and staff
  • Co-creating community
  • Helping faculty and staff problem-solve
  • Planning strategically with CAS departments
  • Connecting CAS faculty and staff who need assistance to the right resources or people
  • Creating resources of information and sharing them with CAS faculty and staff

VISION

As a result of working with ASAC staff, we hope students, faculty, and staff will feel:
Affirmed, Seen, Supported, and Inspired.

VALUES

We welcome all visitors to the Arts and Sciences Advising Center as they are. We aspire to be a safe space for students to share their experiences and opinions. We strive to establish trusting, genuine relationships between ourselves and students, as well as between ourselves and our coworkers in CAS.

I have had a very positive experience working with my advisor and the other faculty in my majors. I truly wouldn't be nearly as prepared for life after college if not for this advisor/these professors and the guidance they have given me.
