Michelle Grabner: Northwest Work at Hedreen Gallery in Lee Center for the Arts

The Hedreen Gallery at Seattle University presents an exhibition of paintings, sculptural mobiles, and videos by acclaimed Milwaukee-based artist, curator, critic, and educator Michelle Grabner. Based in repetitive processes and patterns, Grabner's work simultaneously evokes the measurable rhythms and daily routines of (feminine-gendered) domestic labor, and embodies mathematical and philosophical principles—the banal and beautiful, personal and universal. At the Hedreen, Grabner will for the first time create an ephemeral wall painting and incorporate fused glass elements she has created as a resident at Bullseye Glass in Portland, where she is currently a resident artist. She will also exhibit a new group of paintings on canvas and a new video created at Bullseye to complement her 2002 video Chihuly Glass Camp for Boys.

Grabner is Chair of Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a senior critic at Yale University. She co-curated the 2014 Whitney Biennial, and her artwork has been exhibited at venues including the Indianapolis Museum of Art; Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Tate St. Ives, UK; and Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland. She runs exhibition spaces The Suburban and The Poor Farm with her husband, artist Brad Killam, and is currently organizing the 2016 Portland Biennial, which opens July 9th.
