Biography
I grew up in the Seattle area and have been teaching at Seattle University since 2002. In a typical year, I offer courses on the First World War, religion and politics in Nazi Germany (my primary area of research), revolution and rebellion, and genocide in the modern world. Although these courses vary in terms of time, location, and focus, I find all of them to be relevant when thinking about contemporary challenges such as nationalism, militarism, economic inequality, and the marginalization or persecution of persons on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, or citizenship status. When I am not teaching, writing, or otherwise engaged in the work of my profession, I enjoy walking, hiking, reading, baking bread, learning Spanish, and raising backyard chickens.
