Teaching and Research Interests

For International Studies, I currently teach Culture Clash (INST 3910/UCOR 3600) and Eurovision, Nation, and Identity: Three-Minute Europe (UCOR 1400). These courses are situated at the intersection of culture and society, where we use analytical tools from the humanities to help explain social and political contexts.

My aim is to ensure that my classes are engaging and interactive, and I regularly seek feedback from students to find out what’s working well and what we could adjust so that you get the most out of your learning experience.

In the other part of my role (Faculty Development), I run courses and programs for faculty on their own development as teachers, scholars, and as citizens of the Academy.

My research since moving to the USA has focused on cross-national studies of Faculty Development and student learning. Key themes in my research relate to identifying barriers to understanding (especially linguistic and disciplinary barriers), overcoming preconceptions, and acting with integrity.

Biography

Having started out in German Studies (for my bachelor’s and PhD), I have crossed a few disciplinary boundaries in my teaching, moving into foreign language, cross-cultural management, communication, and higher education (which is where spend most of my time in the Center for Faculty Development). Teaching in International Studies is something of a return to my academic home.

Originally from the UK, I moved to Seattle in 2006. And so that I don’t forget what it’s like to be a learner, I’m currently taking Swedish lessons.
