School is out, but not for long!

Summer is a great time to get some quality rest and enjoy many of the beautiful spots around Seattle. As July turns into August many of us begin to realize that the school year is going to be here very soon and its nearing that time to prepare. So, what can you do to prepare for graduate school?

Practicum

The one aspect of graduate school that requires a good deal of preparation is practicum. The amount of preparation will vary depending on the organization you are placed with. You may be asked to attend an orientation before the school year starts, complete virtual trainings, send vaccination records, and perform other onboarding duties— so stay close to your email. In addition to this, if you don’t already have business casual clothing you may want to find one or two outfits to get you started. Dress code can be different depending on the organization, but business casual is usually a safe bet.

Supplies

Taking notes on a laptop or tablet can be a paper-saving option and may allow you to be more organized, but if you like your handwritten notes I would stock up on some notebooks. In addition to this, you might want to make sure your printer is in working order with some fresh ink— it will come in handy if you enjoy completing reading assignments the old fashion way. Some other helpful items on my back-to-school list are highlighters, a planner, and sticky notes.

On-campus

If you’re new to Seattle University, one important task will be picking up your student identification card. This card will help you gain access to places like the library when they have the doors locked, allow you to pay for food if you have a meal plan, and can help you get discounts anywhere that offers a student discount. Last year a parking pass was not necessary since classes were fully virtual, but if you have in-person classes this year (and you commute) you will likely need a parking pass.

Library

The library database is going to be your best friend while in graduate school, especially if you know how to use it properly. If you want to get a head start on this, I suggest familiarizing yourself with the library databases and toolkits. The library staff are always willing to help and have great information that will improve your research skills and assist you in getting your work done more efficiently. One of the research assistants at the library showed me how to use RefWorks which has changed my life for the better when it comes to citations.

Rest

Last on the to-do list, take all the rest and relaxation you can before the school year starts because graduate school is tough. I know it’s exciting to start on this new adventure and you may want to start school related tasks now, but I can assure you that you will thank your past self for resting before the year starts.
