Apply to a Design program that offers a uniquely holistic approach grounded in both academic and practical skills, all underscored by our commitment to sustainability and social justice. Within our broadly informed curriculum, you will explore typography, digital imaging, digital media for print, graphic design, motion graphics and web design—including user-experience and interface design.
Both in and outside the classroom, you will combine theory and practice informed by readings, discussions and research as you hone your skills and abilities through internships, in-depth critiques and hands-on workshops within a sophisticated and cutting-edge studio environment.
HOW IT WORKS
Every student enters our program as a candidate and takes five studio courses leading up to the mid-career review. Students who then gain entrance to the major go on as a cohort to complete the sequence of upper-level classes.
Our cohort model embraces a diverse learning community and allows you to move through the program together with support from your peers. Our program fosters academic, professional and personal growth and gives you direct access to accomplished faculty and industry professionals from the greater Seattle design community, with our low student-to-faculty ratio.
• You will be able to articulate a personal creative vision in print and screen media through oral presentation
• You will integrate the theory of digital art and design into your studio work
• You will demonstrate proficiency in appropriate digital design software
• You will devise a design solution for a real-life local community organization
• You will produce a professional portfolio suitable for a chosen design career path
Students interested in taking the preliminary courses leading up to the review for acceptance into the Design Program Major (DESG) should declare Design Program Candidacy (DESG.CAND) as a preparatory major. During this stage students will fulfill the prerequisite courses in preparation for the mid–career Portfolio Review to gain acceptance into the Design Program Major. DESIGN PROGRAM MAJOR (DESG) Students wishing to advance to the Design Program major (DESG) are required to undergo the Portfolio Review process towards the end of their sophomore year. Transfer students are invited to submit an equivalent portfolio at the same time or before the start of their junior year.
The Portfolio Review reflects the program’s philosophies of both excellence and sustainability: A mid-career Portfolio Review accurately mirrors the competitive nature of the design field and in so doing will encourage students to strive towards excellence. Additionally, the review will limit the number of students who will advance from Design Candidacy status to the major in Design, thereby keeping class sizes at a sustainable level while also fostering a cohort experience for those students going through the program.
The Portfolio Review takes place towards the end of the sophomore year. Portfolios must be submitted prior to the beginning of the Spring Quarter Academic Advising period (see portfolio description.) Students who are not advanced to the Design major should consult with their advisor regarding options for declaring a different major. Students may apply a second time in the case they are not accepted upon their first review.
Student has earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and a GPA of 3.00 or higher for the required DIDS prerequisite courses:
Submission of 3 examples from each of the courses listed in the sequence above (15 digital images total). Each work should be identified by course number, title, size, medium, date.
Submission of an application form, including a 1,000 - 1,500 word essay answering the following questions:
(These are NOT requirements, only recommendations for students who would like compatible personal equipment)
