Minor, Theology and Religious Studies

Theology and Religious Studies Minor

In order to earn a minor in Theology and Religious Studies, students must complete 30 credits in Theology and Religious Studies (THRS). This total includes the Core (UCOR) requirements of UCOR 2100 Theological Explorations and UCOR 3100 Religion in a Global Context. Although UCOR courses do not count toward the major in THRS, they do count toward the minor. Note too that the specialization categories are different from those of the major.

Note:

1. Students considering a minor should contact the department chair as soon as possible to discuss options: Donna Teevan, PhD dteevan@seattleu.edu. The chair will assign you an advisor, which makes it far easier to select the right courses and to get into the courses you need to complete the minor.

2. Once you complete your UCOR 2100 and 3100 requirements, you will need to take courses with a THRS prefix to avoid having duplicate titles and to risk losing credit. Many of these are cross-listed with UCOR 2100 and 3100 courses. You can find THRS courses on SUOnline by looking under THRS rather than UCOR. If you have questions, email the chair.

3. There are codes in the university catalog course descriptions for THRS courses which indicate the specialization for which a course will count. Brochures with lists of courses for each area of specialization are available in the departmental office, which can also be helpful.

4. It is strongly recommended that students take the THRS courses designed just for majors and minors (THRS 2400 and any of the advanced THRS 4000-level courses). As a minor you are qualified to take them, but you need to get in touch with the chair for assistance in registering for these courses. The benefit of these courses is that they are just for majors and minors and are not part of the Core. They are small classes with other students who share your interests and give you the chance to work closely with a faculty member.
