Greetings Friends -- I am Dr. Michael Trice, Spehar-Halligan Professor and Director of the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement, here at Seattle University. Our entire team of, faculty, staff, and students hope that you are enjoying the many resources we have created this year.
For those who have worked with us throughout this year, CEIE is hosting a Community Luncheon on Tuesday, June 20th, 2023, from 11:30 to 1 PM at Seattle University.
Visit the June Newsletter and RSVP. At the luncheon we desire to gain from, and share with, you the ideas we are pursuing in theological graduate formation, or about collaboration with other universities and seminaries, and we’ll show you our newest online course on Religious Literacy.
We will likewise raffle off five free tickets to the Parliament of the World’s Religions’ International Convening, which is taking place in Chicago on August 13th through the 18th – at the eve of the 130th anniversary of the 1st Parliament, in 1893.
We have a lot to offer you in the coming newsletter. Content includes: First, our recent Public Radio interview on religious organizations selling their property to assist unsheltered people. And second, a new online multimedia course for all of you, wherever you are, dedicated to the topic of increasing Religious Literacy, and also, our spring issue in The Interfaith Observer (TIO) dedicated to Dr. King’s "Beloved Community,” from unique religious, spiritual, and cultural viewpoints, which encourages all of us to consider the transformational qualities of community in our lives.
The Team hand-picked three new podcasts, including our podcast with Arun Gandhi, a friend to us at the Center who passed away last month. Arun reflects with us on the gift of anger to transform injustice into resilience and a way forward. We have events, a new interdisciplinary volume being published through Georgetown University Press about injury and repair in a pandemic age, and so much more.
Our work today is central to a legacy of over fifty years of commitment to theological and leadership formation in faith communities that includes Catholics, Protestants, Episcopalians, Unitarian Universalists, and additional religious partners. Legacy is an interesting word, isn’t it? If we only look backward, then the past is only a memory, which means in order for legacy to live, it must have a future, and a vision for cooperation into the future. That’s what we will do. Strategy to do so always begins with a transformed heart.
Today, this new Center, just starting its third year, is at home in the Office of the Provost at Seattle University.
We are uniquely positioned in this Jesuit, Catholic university, with a shared commitment to visible ecumenical unity between Christians, to strong relationships essential for peace that is the primary public, moral role of religions around the world, and to the public engagement of religion as a transformational force for good in the world that challenges society to in often difficult times.
We have a lot to talk about for the coming year. We begin planning on first certificate program, we welcome our first published volume from Georgetown University Press … but more on that in September.
On behalf of the entire CEIE Advisory Council, our students, and staff – Here's to a good Summer ahead – Enjoy the newsletter!
Thank you,
Michael Reid Trice, PhD
