The 2019 Washington and Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) will take place in Seattle at the University of Washington (Feb 25-27, 2019). CEJS is a co-sponsor of the event.
WOHESC 2019 will highlight the topic of “Equity and Diversity”: What are the opportunities and barriers of marginalized and vulnerable communities through environmental, climate, and social justice? Why is it important to address diversity and equity issues in our sustainability efforts? What is social sustainability and how can we work to increase its relevance on our campuses? The goal is to draw connections between environmental impacts, economic impacts, and social impacts as we gain insight and understanding about the vital role equity and diversity plays in our sustainable future. WOHESC 2019 aims to examine systemic change and generate dialogue that guides and inspires sustainability and climate action. The goal is to both enliven the role of higher education in the future of Washington and Oregon and the role students play in a future world.

This year, Washington will be the first state in the country to pass equitable, science-based climate policy and we need an army of concerned young people to make sure that it happens! Join us for a day of workshops and trainings about climate justice and climate policy. This summit will explicitly examine the intersections between climate change, racial justice, and economic equality. Learn concrete steps that you can take after the summit to make sure Washington redirects fossil fuel money toward renewable energies, frontline communities, and just transition workers.
Participants have the opportunity to receive a Climate Leadership Certification from Our Climate. Food will be provided and Our Climate will assist with transportation. Scholarships include full registration, entitling students to attend educational sessions, workshops, exhibits, tours of recycling facilities, social events, meals and the WSRA Annual Awards Banquet. Three nights’ lodging in the host hotel will be provided. In addition to attending Conference, scholarship recipients will receive free registration to all 2017 Washington Recycles Every Day (WRED) events organized by WSRA and held around the state and WSRA communications. The Summer Institute of the Enduring Legacies Native Cases Initiative will build on more than eleven years of work developing teaching interdisciplinary case studies on significant issues in Indian Country and offering workshops for educators to network and learn how to use the cases in their classes. Our interdisciplinary collection of cases covers a wide range of topics applicable to all academic fields. Problem-based learning, place-based learning and collaborative learning are the cornerstones of our approach. Cases promote student engagement and critical thinking in the context of complex and pressing real world issues. They are a terrific way of promoting diversity. At this institute, we will practice working through cases collaboratively to learn how to facilitate case analysis and discussion. Learn more.
