Description: Crosscut presents two days of thought-provoking conversations and innovative thinking, tackling the most important issues of our times. Journalists, politicians, authors, and newsmakers from our community and around the nation come together to take a hard look at the people, policy and events that shape our lives. A very limited number of free tickets to the Crosscut Festival are available from CEJS. Example presentations from the full program include: Former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman will be talking climate change and public policy, Apocalypse Now will be a discussion on the IPCC report indicating devastating effects of climate change are likely to be felt by 2040. , Creative Community & Climate will spotlight artwork that is translating our changing world, WA to do about wildfires will be a fascinating exploration of what we can do to lessen the devastation of wildfires, and Bridging the Partisan Divide asks: can we come together on environmental policy?

Description: Spring clean your home and office and bring recyclables for FREE to the SU Recycling Event on Tuesday, March 5, 2019! Items accepted include: appliances, batteries, books, confidential papers (which will be shredded), compact fluorescent light bulbs, electronics and accessories, clothing, machinery, office supplies, plastic grocery bags, Styrofoam blocks and packaging material, and toner cartridges. Do not bring chemicals, mattresses, or furniture. Staff will help unload heavy items. Hard drives and other storage devices will be wiped through a secure data destruction program. Description: SU has reached a serious point in the state of its recycling. We simply need to take action and educate our campus community in an effort to reduce our recycling contamination to <10% as soon as we can. An audit from the Student Center recycling Compactor (which collects recycling from the kitchens and dining areas) indicated a contamination rate of over 10% meaning…the compactor's recycling will be sent to the landfill! During the week of March 11- 15th at lunchtime (12:30pm-1:30pm), we will need 2 volunteers each day to stand near the waste bins in C-Street, to "talk trash" and provide a brief "Recycling 101". Description: Volunteer in a fun waste sorting event and find out what we at SU throw away in the wrong bins! Staff, faculty, and student volunteers are needed to help sort the university’s waste in this annual public waste-audit on campus. Participants sort SU's trash into recyclable or compostable materials to determine how much of the trash that SU sends to the landfill could be diverted. Any questions? Description: This tabling event, cohosted with Seattle Public Utilities, is meant to raise awareness of the conditions of SU's recycling stream and educate the campus community on proper recycling. Help spread the word on how to save SU's recycling by putting the right stuff in the right bins, making sure all recyclables are reasonably EMPTY, CLEAN and DRY, and NOT recycling styrofoam, plastic films/bags, food waste, packaged foods, food soiled paper, liquids, e-waste or textiles in the blue bin here on campus!

Description: #youthvgov is the viral hashtag for the constitutional climate lawsuit being brought by 21 youth plaintiffs against our federal government. The young plaintiffs claim that the federal government’s actions and inaction in the face of climate change are a violation of fundamental constitutional rights. Young people will be dealing with severe climate change disasters during the prime of their lives, making the age of these plaintiffs a crucial part of their case. Join us for a Q&A with Kiran Oommen (SU student and Juliana v US plaintiff), Prof. Michael Mayer (School of Law), and Frances Zars (Editor in Chief-Seattle Journal of Environmental Law) to explore the constitutional issues at stake and how this youth-driven legal activism seeks to secure the right to a stable climate and healthy atmosphere. Description: The 2018 Special Olympic USA Games will be hosted in Seattle, making this the biggest sporting event to hit the Seattle area in more than 25 years. Seattle University is one of the SOUSA venues and will welcome 260 athletes, 1,000 family members, and 2,000 spectators to campus for the Games. The Special Olympic's sustainability team has the ambitious goal of making this the first Carbon Neutral Special Olympics USA Games!
