Food Justice Week at SU, Oct. 16-23

Food Justice Week is an invitation to explore the complex relationship between food and justice through interactive, educational and thought-provoking events. World Food Day

Description: October 16th was first recognized as World Food Day in 1945 by the United Nations with the belief that “the goal of freedom from want of food, suitable and adequate for the health and strength of all people can be achieved." In honor of World Food Day, we invite you to join us for a film screening of Hungry to Learn and a discussion about food justice on college campuses and how we can bring the mission of World Food Day to our campus. Hungry to Learn is a documentary by Soledad O’Brien and Geeta Gandbhir that explores the issue of food security on college campuses. Description: In celebration of Food Justice Week, Redhawk Dining & The Office of Multicultural Affairs have a special culinary treat up our sleeves. Join us Tuesday, October 20th at 6:00pm @RedhawkDining to tune into a live IGTV and watch as our culinary team prepares a whole meal while talking you Redhawks through how to prepare each dish, where our ingredients are sourced, and how to utilize parts of produce that may otherwise have been thrown away! Throughout the session we will answer any questions you may have about the dish or our sustainability programs! We will also hold a Live Q&A with our Chef de Cuisine to answer any further questions and provide further cooking tips/tricks.We'll be preparing Chicken and Veggie Meatballs, Smashed Potatoes, Roasted Carrots, Veggie Top Pesto, and a Sustainable Dessert. We’ll see you there virtually!

"Nature Underfoot" by John Hainze, PhD

 The Climate Crunch

Taking place on the Second Day of Global Action where law students raise awareness about climate and climate justice. Across the country, youth climate activists are mobilizing people to protect the planet. In 2021, Loyola's Virtual Climate Change Conference will focus on how to amplify the voices of these young activists. Each evening throughout the week, participate in a discussion around a variety of topics including a Keynote Conversation with youth climate activists Vic Barrett and Dejah Powell moderated by WBEZ's Jerome McDonnell. CEJS Student Fellowship Presentations

Description: Please join us for a presentation by CEJS student fellows Myron Joel Bañez and Piper Klinger. Piper Klinger (Environmental Science, '21), recipient of the Gary L. Chamberlain fellowship, will present a comprehensive and inexpensive approach to prepare biochar for use in the treatment of arsenic-contaminated drinking water with biochar. Myron Joel Bañez (Economics and Public Affairs, '21), recipient of the Francis Student Research Fellowship, examines the role of the built environment to urban Filipino-American spaces and community development in Seattle. Interreligious Dialogue Initiative

Description: Please join us for this unique opportunity to learn about eco-spirituality from two cherished spiritual leaders. The topic will be twofold: Lummi spirituality in dialogue with Jesuit spiritual practice as well as Lummi reflections on ecology and earth care.

Darrell Hillaire, a highly esteemed leader and the executive director of Tse-sum-ten and Setting Sun Productions, has served as a coach, mentor, teacher, and leader for the Lummi Nation for more than twenty years (read more here).

Pat Twohy, SJ is the author of two seminal works, Finding a Way Home and beginnings: A Meditation on Coast Salish Lifeways. He has lived with and served indigenous peoples of the Northwest for four decades, including eleven years with the Colville Confederated Tribes in Eastern Washington and more recently the Swinomish and Tulalip Tribes of the Coast Salish Peoples.
