Celebrate Earth Month!

 

April 22nd is Earth Day! We encourage all SU students, staff, faculty, and alumni to reflect on how we care for the earth and our communities, and to participate in one of the many events that are happening this month on and off campus.

On-Campus Events

ECOCHALLENGE

When: April 10-28, 2017
Where: Seattle University (various locations)
Description: Have fun, care for the planet and our communities, and win great prizes! Celebrate Earth Month and participate in SU’s 4th annual EcoChallenge! The EcoChallenge is a fun 3-week event encouraging participants to make small lifestyle changes that contribute to a world of impact! The event is open to SU students, faculty, staff, and alumni. You can participate as an individual or as a team. This year's theme is "Belongings and Belonging." For 3 weeks you will be challenged to reflect on your consumption and its connection to our communities, locally and globally. $25 worth of gifts from local businesses and SU sponsors will be awarded each week to the highest scoring participants. Tree Planting

When: Tuesday, April 18, 2017      Time: 1:30-4:30PM
Where: Seattle University Quad
Description: Celebrate Arbor Day with SU Biology Professor Brenda Bourns and her class on Tuesday afternoon, 04/18, to observe the planting of 5 new trees in Seattle University's Quad! This event will help us get certified with Tree Campus USA as a school that promotes healthy trees and student service learning! Contact brittons@seattleu.edu with any questions.

Bon Appetit Events at C-street

When: April 19-28, 2017
Where: Cherry Street Market
Description:

  • April 19: Learn to yield judgment about the appearance of your produce. Bon Appetit invites you to compare grocery store "acceptable" produce versus produce purchased straight from the farm.
  • April 20: Bon Appetit will offer delicious free samples of food made from commonly thrown away items, such as candied orange peels!
  • April 28: For National Stop Food Waste Day (04/28), Bon App will weigh the waste generated at Bon Appetit that day.

Tour the Bullitt Center

Did you know that the greenest, most energy-efficient commercial building in the world is located just a few blocks away from SU campus? SU's Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability is housed in the Bullitt Center and will host two tours of the building on Thursday, April 20. Learn more and RSVP here. SU Interfaith Earth Day

When: Thursday, April 20, 2017      Time: 11:30AM-1:30PM
Where: Student Center 160 and the Hearth area, including the green immediately prior to entering the building
Description: Join us at SU's 4th Interfaith Earth Day fair. Take action at the Action Center (STCN 160) and meet campus and off-campus Earth Justice organizations; enjoy live music brought to you by KXSU and SU student performers; partake in a Mindfulness Meditation session; and participate in Interfaith Earth Justice conversations at the Hearth.The event is sponsored by Seattle University's School of Theology & Ministry, Campus Ministry, Earth Ministry, Washington Interfaith Power and Light, Eco Sangha, KXSU, and the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability. Learn more.

Tree Planting

When: April 21, 2017      Time: 10-1PM
Where: SU Quad
Description: Join SU students and the grounds crew for the planting of 4 trees for the QUAD Tree Planting Project in celebration of Earth Day. Information will be available to learn about the very important role trees play in our environment! Contact brittons@seattleu.edu with any questions.

When: April 22, 2017      Time: 9:45AM (meeting at SU Library plaza). 10:00AM-1:00PM (Speakers, Events, and March)
Where: We will meet at SU's library plaza and walk together to the start of the March at the Cal Anderson park.
Description: Take part in the global "March for Science" on Earth Day, April 22. We will walk over as a group to the Cal Anderson Park and participate in the March to support science that upholds the common good and encourages leaders to create evidence-backed policy reflecting the public interest. Where: Lawn on the West side of the ADMIN Building
Description: SU’s Grounds will create a labyrinth mown onto the lawn on the west side of the ADMN building opening April 24th and unofficially closing May 3rd or until it is no longer visible on the lawn. Come and walk the labyrinth! This self-serve contemplative activity during Earth week invites labyrinth walkers to connect with the beauty and gifts offered by the earth and initiate a reflection on the importance of caring for our natural world.

CEJS Spring Brown Bag Lunch - Faculty Fellows Research Presentation

When: April 25, 2017      Time: 12:30-1:30PM
Where: Wyckoff Auditorium (ENGR 200)
Description: Join us as CEJS Faculty Fellows Dr. Quan Le; Associate Professor, Department of Economics at Albers School of Business and Economics, and Dr. Shiny Abraham; Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering present their research. Dr. Le will discuss the collaboration of Seattle University and Nicaraguan smallholder cooperatives in bringing the Fair Trade and Organic Coffee Café Ambiental  to campus and the broader community. Dr. Abraham’s talk will focus on the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to build and deploy smart, connected sensors that provide continuous monitoring of air, water, and soil quality. Learn more.

Plant & Veggie Sale AND Compost Give-Away

When: April 28, 2017      Time: 10:00AM-2:00PM
Where: CLMB Greenhouse in the 1313 Yard (1313 E. Columbia St.)
Description: Shop for plants, learn about growing your own food, and receive a FREE bag of compost "freshly" made from pre-consumer food waste right here on SU campus. There will be all sorts of plant starts for sale (around 1500 plants!). The prices will range from $0.50 to $2.00 and the options will range from tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants to lettuces, flowers and herbs. The event is hosted by SU's Food With Spirit club and SU's Grounds and Recycling Departments!
