Each year, in the weeks leading up to Earth Day (April 22nd) CEJS, in partnership with various Seattle University departments and student groups, encourages action and participation in initiatives that focus on the urgent need for environmental justice, sustainable development, and climate solutions. See below for the Earth Month 2022 program.

Description: The goal of "EcoChallenge" is for individuals to take action for a better shared future. This year's Earth Month EcoChallenge focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Pick a personal action and take your small step to make our common home a healthier, more equitable, and sustainable place. Actions range from one-time, such as committing 10 minutes to learn about endangered species and daily actions, such as tracking your single-use plastic usage. The top 3 winners from the SEATTLEU team will receive a $25 gift card to Frankie & Jo’s, Mighty-O Donuts, the Elliott Bay Bookstore, OR a donation on their behalf to an environmental organization of their choosing! Description: Residence halls are committing to "Do More to Save More"! What's to expect during Earth Month 2022? A display with your residence hall's performance for water and energy use will be traveling from hall to hall to inform residents and spur action. Student residents: your knowledge will then be tested at the "EARTH MONTH" trivia night on April 29 (see details below). This initiative is sponsored by RHA, CEJS, and SU Facilities.

Description: Part of Redhawk Dining’s Earth month celebration will be Meatless Mondays all month long! Stop by Fusion to enjoy entirely meatless and delicious meals. Description: This event will help you understand your climate anxiety, process it through action, and end with a discussion on how to implement these actions in our own community. The anonymous answers from this Padlet will be directly addressed by our panel consisting of Emily Wright, an adjunct professor of Environmental Beliefs and Behaviors and Moji Igun, the founder of Blue Daisi Consulting, a zero waste & sustainability consulting group for small businesses. If you have not filled out the Padlet yet, please do so. This event is open to all SU students, faculty, and staff, and co-hosted by CEJS and EVST (Environmental Studies). Please RVSP HERE if you will join in-person as there is limited space available! There is no need to RVSP if you will be joining virtually.

Description: April’s Teaching Kitchen will be with chef Mark Fortino and his sous chefs will be a member of SGSU. The Teaching Kitchen will showcase all of the edible gardens around campus and how to utilize them in a plant-based meal!

Description: Engineers for a Sustainable World will be selling tickets for a 50/50 Cash Pot Raffle where students will be able to purchase one ticket for $5 or three for$10. On Friday, 4/22 the winner will be drawn, and 50% of the pot will be their winning, while the other 50% will go towards the Rain Garden fundraiser.

Description: Redhawk Dining and Engineers for a Sustainable World are partnering to put on a farm-to-table restaurant takeover with local vegan, gluten-free restaurant HeartBeet! Ten percent of your meal will be donated to the Rain Garden project on campus. Also, stop by the 2nd floor of the Student Center to talk to ESW members about Earth Day, why sustainable practices are important, and to get your free stickers, buttons, and bookmarks with information!

Description: Join us for the 3rd edition of Earth Talks, a virtual showcase of short, 5-minute presentations by SU students, faculty, staff, and community partners. The theme this year is Just Sustainability-Care for our Common Home. The event will be held across 2 sessions on Earth Day, April 22, 2022 with a diverse array of topics including research, service, community projects, and artwork as well as a Q&A session with keynote speakers, Senator Rebecca Saldaña and David Mendoza. Description: Curious about how we can advance food security and sustainable agriculture in our society and within our Seattle University community? Join us for our SDG Focus Event on Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture to learn more about the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the event, we will then take a deep dive into the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #2: Zero Hunger which aims to “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture”. Attendees will learn about both external and internal resources, opportunities, and other initiatives they can join to actively work towards addressing the hunger crisis and restructuring food systems. Speakers will include Real Escape for the Sex Trade (REST), who will talk about their work on food security within the sex trafficking survivor population.

Description: As inhabitants of a shared planet, this exhibit encourages visitors to consider the interconnected nature of the world’s natural and human-made systems, to understand how overlapping harms caused by racism, greed, and environmental destruction affect BIPOC communities, and to take action in their own lives to address these issues. It centers unsung stories of collective action and resistance by vulnerable communities on the front lines, while calling for the voices of those most affected to be centered in policy making and driving solutions. Visitors will be able to explore these stories and other content through photographs, artworks, artifacts, and first person voices, to learn how BIPOC communities are addressing Environmental Justice and how we can all play a role in supporting collaborative systemic change. Description: As a response to the global problem of ocean plastics and marine debris, the room-sized "Our Plastic Planet" macramé installation includes repurposed, salvaged, and upcycled materials from our local waterbodies, including Seattle’s Elliott Bay and Duwamish River. “Our Plastic Planet” encourages people to come face-to-face with the plastic waste from everyday life in a playful way to inspire action. This event will feature an art-making experience with upcycled plastic by macrame artist Cari Simson, a talk with four of the local artists whose work appears in the exhibition, poetry and music performed by Shin Yu Pai and Jessika Kenny, and My Favorite Things tours with two climate scientists from the University of Washington. Plus, community organizations, a curated water playlist, and free gallery access. Register here.

Description: Bellevue College is holding the 23rd annual Earth Week – a week of exciting sustainability and climate justice related activities. The theme this year is “Climate Voices: Sharing, listening, and taking action together“, which centers the importance of conversations, storytelling, and the sharing of knowledge as a powerful tool to spark action and build hope for a sustainable and just future.
