Carol Adams, PhD

Areas of emphasis: secondary literacy, curriculum development and instructional planning, pre- and in-service teacher learning, project based learning, and research-practice collaboration. 

Dr. Adams has been a literacy teacher and researcher for nearly 20 years. She is a former K-12 classroom teacher, high school literacy specialist, and curriculum developer, having earned her M.Ed in Language and Literacy from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Washington with a focus on secondary literacy. Upon receiving her doctorate, she served as post-doctoral scholar and then as a research scientist on the Knowledge in Action project, which investigated how project-based learning can be applied to rigorous high school courses to promote deep and adaptive learning while continuing to cover essential content. Her current research interests include the intersection between literacy and content learning, research-practice collaboration, and teaching for deeper learning and her methodological expertise includes design-based implementation research and qualitative methods.
