Christians around the world have just celebrated the holiest of seasons - Easter.
I often wonder if the experience of Easter has really changed us? Has it been an opportunity to be nurtured in the faith and to shape how we live our lives?
If we step back a little bit from the death and resurrection of Jesus and focus on his ministry, we find that his ministry on earth involved critique of Roman occupation and those powers which oppressed the poor, the outcast, and women. He challenged those systems – cultural, religious, political – which maintain the status quo and their power at the expense of the people.
We have an opportunity every year and every moment to embrace the Easter message of hope and love that moves us to work for social justice, equality, healing, and reconciliation. As disciples of Jesus, we are freed to work for liberation and freedom, to do justice, and seek peace and wholeness in his name. The Easter message does not end with the resurrection; death does not have the final word, and because he is risen we are free to live the life of hope.
In peace and hope,
