Principles for Leadership Development

SU's Principles for Leadership Development

Seattle University offers a truly unique leadership development experience for students. We have developed a leadership model that honors a student's personal identities and priorities, follows best practices of leadership education, and is rooted in Jesuit foundations and the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP). It is built upon 7 principles:

  • Leadership must be toward the common good.
  • Leadership is grounded in personal values, spirituality & integrity.
  • Leadership is shaped by personal identity & social location.
  • Leadership is committed to collective & relational practices.
  • Leadership requires practical & cognitive skills.
  • Leadership is practiced in context.
  • Leadership is an imagination for what is possible.

This model links a student's academic content with co-curricular experiences to provide a cohesive framework for exploring and reflecting on their personal leadership.

These 7 principles inform Seattle U's approach to developing students as leaders. Watch this video to learn what they are, how they will show up during your time at SU, and why that matters--both now and for your future.
