Seattle U had five students who were awarded the prestigious honor. Seattle U tied for 4th place with three other schools in the master’s institutions category. This is the fifth year in a row, and eighth time, that Seattle U has ranked as a “top producer” of student Fulbright awardees. The Seattle U Fulbright students graduated last year and are working in Columbia, India, Rwanda, South Korea and the United Kingdom in the fields of English, Public Health and Theater. They are: - Jennifer Cruz, Psychology major, Research Grant, Evaluating the effectiveness of cancer prevention tools in India, India - Meme Garcia-Cosgrove: Performing Arts/Gender Studies, Study Grant, Masters in Classical Acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, United Kingdom - Lara Gooding: International Studies/French, English Teaching Assistant, Rwanda - Helen Packer: Humanities/English, English Teaching Assistant, South Korea - Hannah Nia: Environmental Studies, English Teaching Assistant, Colombia Garcia's award to the UK is particularly significant because placement in the UK is the most competitive Fulbright program in the world. Garcia is the second SU student to receive a Fulbright to the UK. Additionally, two Seattle U faculty currently are doing a Fulbright Scholar year abroad. John Carter, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Mathematics, received a Fulbright Scholars award for the University of Bergen in Bergen, Norway from January to June 2017. Mara Adelman, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus in the Department of Communication, received a Fulbright Specialist award for Fudan University in Shanghai. The Fulbright program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Top-producing institutions are highlighted annually in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright program has provided more than 360,000 participants with the opportunity to exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
