Distinguished Leadership

At its commencement ceremony earlier this month, the University of Portland presented the 2018 Christus Magister Medal to Seattle University President Stephen Sundborg, S.J. 

Awarded annually to men and women of international distinction, the University of Portland describes the award as its highest honor, conferred upon those who “have evinced a vigorous spiritual life and an accomplished professional career that has significantly advanced knowledge, been of inimitable service to his or her fellow men and women, and been an inspiration and consolation to the world.” 

The university referenced Father Sundborg’s achievements during his 20-year tenure: “(E)nrollment has surged, the endowment has grown significantly, and the university has built a new law school, a student center, and student residences. Plans are currently underway for a new Center for Science and Innovation. Often called the Seattle University’s ‘moral compass,’ Fr. Sundborg is strongly committed to promoting social justice, a core value of the Jesuit Catholic education, and has led the school in addressing issues such as homelessness and the needs of underserved populations in the Seattle area.” 

Seven honorary doctorate recipients joined Father Sundborg in being honored at the University of Portland’s May 6 commencement. 

For Father Sundborg, the award caps off a year in which he also received the 2018 Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Leadership Award for the Pacific Northwest and western Canada region and was honored for his 20 years as president at Seattle University’s 2017 Gala.
