Giving Back

No fewer than 170 staff and faculty volunteered at 13 sites for the 2018 Faculty and Staff Service Day on Friday, Aug. 31. 

One of those teams (pictured) worked with community partner City Fruit. A participant, MK Smith, director of Enterprise Applications in Information Technology Services, describes their efforts: 

“Our group assisted City Fruit with picking fruit and orchard restoration work at the Amy Yee Tennis Center. This location features remnant heirloom apple trees in combination with young fruit trees. Our SU group participated in picking and sorting apples for consumption, cider making, and compost, as well as tree trimming and weed and debris removal.  

“We used two of the university’s brand new Redhawk vans to get to the site.  We had a lot of fun, enjoying a beautiful morning out in the sunshine and getting to know some campus colleagues better, all while supporting this wonderful grassroots organization and serving those who will benefit from the harvest.”

SU's faculty and staff have been participating in Service Day for the past decade. Additionally, the university offers staff a service leave benefit through which they can volunteer with community partners during working hours. Learn more here.
