Seattle U Admits Students from Shuttered Art Institute

The first week of spring quarter welcomed 12 new Redhawks, all former students from the closed Art Institute Seattle who were admitted to begin courses.

The Art Institute abruptly closed on March 8, citing financial reasons, just two weeks shy of the end of the winter quarter, leaving hundreds of students to scramble to find new academic homes. A few of the students resuming their studies at Seattle U will graduate this spring, summer and in the fall.

Seattle U admitted 11 undergraduate transfer students, of which 10 have confirmed and were registered for classes. The university also admitted one student into the graduate Computer Science Certificate program. Five of these 11 students are international students. The Digital Design program was chosen by eight as their major.

“When an institution of higher education closes, it is an opportunity for other institutions to step up and provide support and a safety net,” says Provost Shane P. Martin. “Seattle U strives to be good citizens in the higher education community by offering a new academic home for those Art Institute students who wish to continue their studies here.”

Seattle U offers several arts programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, providing choices for Arts Institute and other students who want to pursue undergraduate degrees. These are Art History, Digital Design, Interdisciplinary Arts with five different specializations (Arts Leadership, Music, Photography, Theater and Visual Art), Performing Arts and Arts Leadership, Photography and Visual Art. The School of New and Continuing Studies offers a degree in Digital Cultures.
