Event Cancellations, Postponements and Changes in University Activities

Following are cancellations and postponements of events and changes to other activities related to Seattle University’s response to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). For additions to this list, please contact theem@seattleu.edu. 

Update on Event Cancellations

Conference and Event Services (CES) has been asked to reach out to all our clients to inform them about additional event cancellations. This is in light of Washington State guidelines, continuing issues in relation to the COVID-19 epidemic and the impact of these on campus and the greater Seattle community. Programs between now and July 31 of the following types will be cancelled:

1. Summer overnight programs
2. In-person programs for youth attendees (under 18 years old)
3. Indoor in-person programs

Deadlines for any of these could be extended if future circumstances warrant.

Information Technology Services (ITS) has posted information on Zoom for videoconferencing and meetings on their website here. In addition, Eventbrite has information on how to schedule an online only event on their website.

Campus constituents with questions or who wish to cancel events or meetings taking place after July 31 should contact CES via e-mail at rooms@seattleu.edu.

Information on Meetings and Events Scheduled Through May 8

Conference and Event Services (“CES”) has been asked to notify clients that all meetings and events through May 8 are presumptively cancelled in light of guidance from the CDC, student departures, and the directive that staff work remotely. CES staff will be working to cancel all bookings in EMS. 

Information Technology Services (“ITS”) has posted information on Zoom, a platform which can be used for videoconferencing and meetings up to 40 minutes in length. Information can be found on their website. 

Campus constituents with questions or who wish to cancel an event or meeting taking place after May 8 should contact CES via e-mail at rooms@seattleu.edu. (The CES main phone line is currently inaccessible, but staff are hoping to find a way to work around that shortly.)  CES is not currently able to reschedule events and meetings, as it is unclear how long the current situation will be in place, but staff will be in touch with all clients once the go-ahead is given to do rescheduling. However, CES staff continue to work on arrangements for events that are past the cancellation deadline; staff are working remotely and are available by e-mail.

An Important Message on Upcoming Events at SU

Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced on March 15 that "all gatherings with over 50 participants are prohibited and all gatherings under 50 participants are prohibited unless previously announced criteria for public health and social distancing are met." (The limit previously had been 250 attendees.)

Latest Cancellations and Postponements

Albers Ethics Week, scheduled for May 4-8, has been postponed to Fall Quarter.

The Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture announces the following postonements:

• A Conversation with Barbara James (Interreligious Dialogue Initiative event) - postponed until Fall 2020
• M. Shawn Copeland, Ph.D., "A New Vision of the Mission of the Church" - postponed until Spring 2021
• Spring Catholic Heritage Lecture - cancelled (we hope to provide an online alternative)
• Immigration Summit - cancelled (online opportunities and resources will be available in May - more info coming!)

The Crosscut Festival, scheduled for May 1-2, is cancelled.

As of Monday, March 16, UREC will remain closed until further notice in order to practice social distancing and slow the spread of COVID-19. Follow us on Instagram @su_rec for at-home workouts and ways to maintain self-care.

The 35th Annual Alumni Awards, scheduled for April 17, is cancelled.

The College of Nursing announces that Role Development of the Clinical Preceptor, scheduled for March 19, has been cancelled; and the College of Nursing Dean’s Lecture, “A Leadership Strategy: Leaning into Conflict by Magnifying MicroAgressions,” scheduled for April 28, has been postponed (no reschedule information yet).

The faculty and staff headshot/portait session scheduled for Friday, March 13, has been cancelled.

Drop-in and listening sessions for the Presidential Search (March 18 and 19) have been postponed. Stay tuned for more information.

Are & Be Success Series (March 11) is cancelled.

Health Professions Expo (March 9) is cancelled.

The Seattle University Choirs’ performance of “Meet Me Here: A Lenten Prayer,” scheduled for Monday, March 9, has been postponed.

“Democracy, Communication and Conscience,” scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, is cancelled and will be rescheduled in spring quarter (presented by ICTC and Department of Communication).

The Red Talk with Professor Francisco Guerrero scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, in Pigott Auditorium has been postponed.

Masses at the Chapel

From Tammy Liddell, director of Campus Ministry:

“As you may know the university will stop holding in-person classes for the winter quarter and is canceling some larger gatherings that may put people at increased risk for spreading the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Out of an abundance of caution and to support public health efforts aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19, all Masses at the Chapel of St. Ignatius are cancelled until further notice. We will be posting daily Scripture reflections on the Campus Ministry website.

Please pray for those around the world who have died, their families and friends, health care workers, first responders and all others impacted by the disease and accompanying anxiety. Updates regarding the status of Mass at the Chapel of St. Ignatius will be posted at Campus Ministry.
