August 4, 2020

Seattle University has earned the 2019-20 WAC Academic Excellence Award, leading the way with a 3.43 GPA across all 20 varsity sports.

Seattle University has earned the 2019-20 WAC Academic Excellence Award. The award is determined by a point system and presented to the institution that performs the best in the following areas: the average grade-point average (GPA) for each undergraduate student-athlete, the average GPA of each undergraduate student body  compared to the average GPA of an institution's student-athletes and the most recent two-year average of institutional Academic Progress Rate scores.

"SU is honored to receive the WAC Academic Excellence Award," says Seattle U Director of Athletics Shaney Fink. "This recognition reflects the university's commitment to academic excellence and the academic success of our student-athletes, particularly during the latter part of this past year as they performed through the challenges of a global pandemic and social unrest. We are fortunate to have wonderful faculty who support the student-athlete experience and hardworking  student-athletes, coaches and administrators who serve as exemplars of the Seattle U mission."

Seattle U led the way with a 3.43 GPA across all 20 varsity sports. The student-athlete GPA is 0.06 points higher than the average Seattle U undergraduate student. The Redhawks also posted a two-year APR average of 989 out of 1,000 .

"Congratulations to Seattle U on earning the WAC Academic Excellence Award," said WAC Commissioner Jeff Hurd. "The level of academic success across the conference is really quite impressive. All of our member schools should be proud of the academic accomplishments of their student-athletes."

In the spring quarter, SU student-athletes tallied a 3.585 GPA, as all 18 teams finished with a GPA over 3.0 for the term.
