Redhawks Celebrate Year with Awards Show

Seattle U hosted its annual Athletics Awards Show, a virtual event, on June 3. In what was truly a unique year for Athletics, it was a celebration of its senior class along with an awards ceremony covering the past year of achievements.

Ally Choate, '21, of softball earned the Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She hit a team-high .363 with 58 hits in 50 games, playing a vital role in the team’s run to the NCAA Tournament. The native of Yelm, Wash., has a 3.73 cumulative GPA while majoring in Humanities for Teaching with minors in mathematics and social welfare. Choate earned her third straight First Team All-WAC honor and was picked NFCA Third Team All-Region. She is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and has claimed three Academic All-WAC selections. 
 
Jack Neton, '21, of men’s swimming claimed the Male Student-Athlete of the Year honor. He is a four-time letter winner at Seattle U and is among the program’s all-time Top 10 in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM events. This season the Long Beach, Calif., native earned Second Team All-WAC honors in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:02.04. He also set the Redhawk Center pool record for the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.58. Academically, Neton is a business analytics major with 3.75 cumulative GPA and a 3-time WAC All-Academic.
 
Women’s soccer’s Sydney Carr, '22, won the Female Athlete of the Year award. She led the nation in goals and points this season, helping women’s soccer win the WAC regular-season title and make their eighth straight appearance in the WAC Tournament Championship game. The Orange, Calif., native scored 16 goals and dished out six assists in 17 games. Carr posted three hat tricks in a four-game stretch in March, including a four-goal, two-assist performance on March 18 at Championship Field. She was named WAC Offensive Player of the Year and United Soccer Coaches All-Pacific Region.
 
Darrion Trammell, '23, of men’s basketball took home the Male Athlete of the Year trophy. He broke out with a terrific debut season, earned First Team All-District, First Team All-WAC and WAC All-Newcomer Team after leading the conference with 20.5 points per game in 23 games. Trammell added 5.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game and led the WAC in free throw shooting at 86.6 percent.
 
Stefanie Madrigal, '23, of softball was named Female Freshman of the Year. In her first full season as a Redhawk, Madrigal earned First Team All-WAC honors and played a key role in SU’s defense of its WAC Tournament Championship. She led the team and the WAC with a 2.83 ERA in 27 appearances, throwing six complete games and three shutouts. Madrigal tied for the team lead with 10 wins on the season.
 
Men’s basketball’s Kobe Williamson, '24, grabbed Male Freshman of the Year recognition. He was the lone Redhawk to start every game this season, averaging 6.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and leading the team with 1.2 blocks per game. He ranked fourth in the WAC in blocks and eighth in rebounds. Williamson put up eight points, 15 rebounds and four blocks in a game at Dixie State earlier this year.
 
Softball was the winner in the Competition of the Year category. The teams won its second-ever Division I NCAA Tournament game with a 6-5 win over Portland State on May 22 at the University of Washington. SU rallied twice, scoring four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good and advance at the Seattle Regional.
 
Leilani Peat, '22, of women’s basketball won the Elgin Baylor Inspiration Award after overcoming numerous obstacles to play collegiate basketball and be a voice on social issues.
 
Men’s track and field athlete Kailan Claiborne, '21, was the Mission Award–Individual winner for his work with the Racial Equity Working Group and other campus and local organizations, while SAAC won the Mission Award–Team for its efforts to support SU athletics and social issues, such as the Voting Matters initiative that saw 100 percent of Redhawk student-athletes register to vote.
 
In the Service to Athletics category, the Performance and Safety Team was celebrated. SU’s Athletics training staff, strength, speed and conditioning team and supporting medical staff were recognized for their tireless work to get the student-athletes on the field of play this year.
