Remembering the second founder of the Jesuits

Tomorrow, Feb. 5, marks the Feast of Pedro Arrupe, S.J., who passed away on that date 30 years ago. Father Arrupe served as the 28th Superior General of the Society of Jesus (1965–1983). 

Regarded as the “second founder” of the Jesuits, Father Arrupe imbued the order with a deepened commitment to “a faith that does justice” and a call to be “persons for others.”

Coverage of Father Arrupe's 1966 visit to Seattle University can be found in The Spectator. In his 2007 homily, The Man Who Was There, SU President Stephen V. Sundborg, S.J., spoke of Father Arrupe’s impact on the university, saying, in part: “…(I do not) believe that Seattle University would be the kind of Jesuit university it is with its mission of ‘empowering leaders for a just and humane world,’ but for him.”
