Acton-Petronotis' OT Goal Knocks off Duke

Alex Acton-Petronotis scored in overtime—the 106^th minute to be precise—to lift Seattle University men’s soccer to a 1-0 win against nationally ranked Duke at Koskinen Stadium.

“It was a tremendous team win over a great program,” says Coach Pete Fewing. “We showed a lot of resolve and grit after a tough loss on September 2. We used a lot of players tonight and everyone contributed. Akili Kasim was terrific in goal and Alex found a great way to celebrate his birthday with a great goal.”

As the teams headed to overtime, both sides dealt with several injury stoppages in the extra session. The hosts had the best chance in OT, as a free kick went wide midway through the frame.

McGlynn struck a shot from 30 yards out in the second overtime, but the Duke keeper punched the ball over the post. From there, Acton-Petronotis played the hero and sent the Blue Devils home with a loss.

Kasim finished with six saves for his second shutout of the fall.

Women’s Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak

Seattle U women’s soccer beat Portland, 1-0 as Jolie St Louis scored late in the first half and the Redhawks defense did the rest as the team stretched its unbeaten streak to five games with the victory at Championship Field.

“I was very happy with our performance against a very solid Portland team,” says Coach Julie Woodward. “I feel we have 20-plus starters on this team and our ability to have such impact off the bench is special. The team followed the game plan. They were disciplined and played with urgency and heart.”

After a back-and-forth start to the day, the Redhawks (4-1-1) began to tilt the field in its direction. Using the strength and accuracy of its defenders' legs, Seattle U continually went over the top of the Portland defense.

The Redhawks travel to Washington State on September 9, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. in Pullman.
