Plant a Tree, Eat Your Greens

April is Earth Month and Seattle University is showcasing its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship through events across campus, from the residence halls to classrooms, gardens to dining spaces.

Here’s a look at two upcoming events:

Tree Planting at Seattle U Park (12th & Jefferson), 10 a.m.–2 p.m., April 8
Seattle University’s grounds are not only pesticide free but also designated as a Washington State Backyard Wildlife Sanctuary. Want to have a hand in planting and tending the grounds of this urban oasis? Here’s your chance: Join the SU Grounds crew and “The Outlaws” student club to plant trees, garden and mulch Seattle U Park to provide more shade and habitat on campus.

Can’t make this event? Later in the month SU Grounds and Washington Native Plant Society are hosting Garden Work Parties, noon–2 p.m. April 20 and 10 a.m.–noon April 21 at the Upper Mall. Garden, plant, weed and mulch in some of SU’s beautiful gardens.

Edible Garden Teaching Kitchen, 9:30 a.m., April 19
Amid the flowers and majestic trees and foliage around campus are edible “green” offerings. On April 19, join Chef Mark Fortino and sous chefs from Student Government at a teaching kitchen showcasing the edible gardens around campus and how to prepare a plant-based meal. Watch the event, which kicks off at 9:30 a.m., on Instagram Live @RedhawkDining.
