For the fifth year in a row, Seattle University has earned the Tree Campus Higher Education designation from the Arbor Day Foundation program.

This special recognition honors colleges and universities for promoting healthy trees while engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Thanks to the leadership of Grounds Manager Shannon Britton and the efforts of the Grounds staff and students, Seattle University has met the five core standards for sustainable campus forestry, which include:

  • Establishment of a tree advisory committee
  • Evidence of a campus tree care plan
  • Dedicated annual expenditures for a campus tree program
  • An Arbor Day observance
  • Sponsorship of student service-learning projects

“Facilities Grounds has practiced quality tree care for some time on campus,” says Britton. “Tree Campus Higher Education provides opportunities to deepen our commitment and connection with legacy trees through engaging student service learning and highlighting their connections with the environment and integral and ecological education. Students have participated in tree plantings, tree maintenance and creating articles on tree projects for campus.”
