Eventful Times

This week's MLK Day celebration is the beginning of a series of what will be a full slate of talks, performances, open houses and other activities. Here's a quick glance at what's coming up at SU in winter quarter. 

• International Week-or I-Week-is an extended celebration of SU's commitment to global engagement. The week kicks off with the perennial crowd-pleaser that is the International Dinner. Be sure to check out this Q&A on I-Week with Ryan Greene, director of the International Student Center, and stay tuned for the full schedule. 

• Immerse yourself in another great SU tradition, Homecoming Weekend, Feb. 4-7. There's something for everyone. The full schedule can be seen here. 

• A truly signature event for the university, this year's Search for Meaning Book Festival takes place Feb. 27 and features keynoters Tracy Kidder, Suki Kim, and Sam Quinones. Go ahead and take a gander at the 50-plus authors who will be part of the festival. 

• The next Catholic Heritage Lecture  will be delivered by Christiana Peppard of Fordham University on Feb. 4. Peppard will take up the topic "Integral Ecology: Pope Francis and Planetary Thinking." 

• Tom Lucas, S.J., rector of the Jesuit community, will give a talk on "The Evolving Ecosystem of Jesuit Education; From Biosphere to Noosphere and Beyond," 4-5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2, in Sullivan Hall C-5. In this richly illustrated and engaging multi-media event sponsored by the Provost's Office, Father Lucas will introduce the SU community to the complex and sometimes contradictory dialectic between Jesuit education and the sciences. 

• Resuming this week is the Albers Executive Speaker Series. Dan Price, CEO of Gravity Payments, will speak at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21. Visit Speaker Series for the full lineup of business leaders. 

• Learn more about SU's newest school, the School of New and Continuing Studies, including the two new B.A. programs that will be launched in spring quarter, at an open house 3:30-7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, in Stuart T. Rolfe Community Room of the Admissions and Alumni Building. Visit NCS to RSVP. 

• For all you Redhawks supporters, there's no shortage of athletic events going on these days. Get the full schedule at www.goseattleu.com. Among the many meets, matches, games and competitions, the newly renovated Connolly Complex will be officially reopened on Feb. 20 in conjunction with the women's basketball game vs. University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Come on out and support our student-athletes! 

• Larry Hubbell, Institute of Public Service Director, and Joni Balter, multi-media journalist and professional in residence, will interview the Seattle Chief of Police, Kathleen O'Toole 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, at Pigott Auditorium.
