Signing on

Seattle University is the first educational institution in the state to sign the Washington Business Climate Declaration. 

The declaration, which President Stephen Sundborg, S.J., recently signed, states: "There is a clear and present need for action on climate change to protect our region's natural assets, its vibrant communities and its growing economy. We business leaders of the Pacific Northwest endorse the Climate Declaration because we support using energy efficiently, investing in cleaner fuels, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions." 

"We are pleased to sign the declaration," said Father Sundborg. "Our commitment to sustainability is rooted in who we are most fundamentally. As a Jesuit university we believe it is imperative to care for the planet and promote environmental justice for all, particularly those living on the margins of society who typically are most harmed by ecological degradation." 

The university's signing of the declaration coincides with Pope Francis's heightened attention to sustainability. The pope is expected to issue a formal church position on climate change later this year. 

Seattle University has a 30-year history of eco-friendly campus operations, including best practices in energy conservation, LEED Gold buildings and pesticide-free gardening.

"To further mobilize strong business support to address climate change while advancing Washington's economic and energy security, I have challenged the sustainability managers at all Washington colleges and universities to join with us in signing," said Karen Price, campus sustainability manager.
