Austin Lee, MFA – Senior Designer, Microsoft Mixed Reality; Former Assistant Professor, Carnegie Mellon School of Design
Austin Lee of Microsoft Mixed Reality will introduce various interaction model for supporting remote collaboration in hybrid environments with other users; novel usage of a 3D space with digital objects; and how to develop prototypes to explore the field of immersive communication through several design methodologies.
BIO
Austin Lee is a designer and educator based in Seattle, currently designing new hardware experiences at Microsoft’s Mixed Reality team. He has advised and created design for Fortune 500 companies and startups, such as Microsoft, NAVER, NASA JPL, Graviky Labs and Shaper Tools. He taught design courses at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design, Art Institute of Seattle and MIT Media Lab.
For two full academic years from 2015 to 2017, as a tenure track assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Design where he served as the Interaction Design Topic Chair, he taught master's level courses such as the Graduate Studio 1: Designing for Interactions and Prototyping for Interaction Design, and was a founding faculty member of the undergraduate Environments Track. He was also an affiliate faculty member of School of Architecture's Master of Tangible Interaction Design (MTID) program at CMU.
At Microsoft, As interaction design lead on the Skype’s Mixed Reality, he drove the design of Skype for HoloLens companion experience and Skype for Windows Mixed Reality. He shipped products including Skype for Amazon Echo as design lead on hardware integration and served as the patent lead on the Skype Design. As senior designer on the Open Studio, an applied incubation team focusing on future of human centered productivity, he built interactive prototypes, generated concept designs for the team, and led motion design for the M365 touchpoint brand experience.
