All Souls Day

On All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2) and throughout the month of November, Christians remember with love those who have died and pray in hope for them. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a cultural celebration rooted in pre-colonial Indigenous and Christian traditions observed throughout Mexico and parts of Latin America. This is a time to celebrate and reconnect with our ancestors and loved ones who have died. 

An integral part of the observance is the creation of an ofrenda, or altar, which is meant to make space for welcoming home the souls of those who have died – to share stories, photos and foods to keep their memory alive so that they are never forgotten. You are welcome to visit and interact with various ofrendas that are being lovingly curated around campus:

• Chapel of St. Ignatius narthex (gathering space), created by Tanya Sanchez-Lopez with help from the Campus Ministry Liturgy Team. Bring photos of your loved ones who have died and add their names to our Book of Remembrance throughout the month.
• Bellarmine Lobby, created by Yarelin Cantu.
• Sullivan Hall, court level, created by Ana Hernández-Zamudio, Lucía Ramírez García, and the Undocumented Law Student Association, in collaboration with community members from Super Familia.

In addition, the Mosaic Center, together with MECHA and CLASS will be hosting a Día de los Muertos celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Sinegal Center for Science and Innovation (room 200), which will include treats, crafts and the movie Coco (2017). We pray that all those who have died may be embraced by God, and that all those who mourn may be comforted.
