From the Common Text Program and University Core:

As announced earlier this spring, the Common Text for AY 22-23 will be Chanel Miller’s Know My Name. All first-year students and incoming transfer students will receive a copy of the book, and we will engage with the book as a university community during Convocation in September. We are pleased to share that we have invited Chanel Miller to speak virtually at Fall Convocation on Monday, Sept. 19.

Immediately following Convocation, we will provide a variety of opportunities in two 40-minute sessions for our incoming students to engage with the book and showcase the range of our work related to the text’s themes. We invite faculty and staff to lead a small-group session such as a hands-on workshop, presentation of scholarship related to the text’s themes, facilitated book discussion, space for reflection, or other means of engagement. We will provide a copy of the book to review and invite you to a workshop to prepare for Convocation.

We also invite faculty, particularly those offering courses to first-year students, to consider including the book or its themes in their upcoming syllabi; a stipend and workshop will be provided.

Please e-mail Hilary Hawley at hawleyh@seattleu.edu if you have an idea for a session or have questions or come by the Core Office (ADMN 120) to sign up and pick up a copy of the book. Our vision is for the entire campus to engage in robust conversations and events related to the Common Text and its themes over the next year.
