NPLR 5430: Fundraising and Philanthropy  

Take this opportunity to sample a course in the Master of Nonprofit Leadership program and receive graduate-level transferable credits*.

Fundraising is essential to the work of the nonprofit sector and serves as a crucial link between donors and organizations. In this course, students will learn to analyze trends, assess opportunities, develop effective and ethical fundraising strategies, integrate fundraising into the larger strategic vision of the organization and inspire others to action. 

This course is designed to provide you with a thorough foundation in both the principles and practices of fundraising, while also considering issues of social justice, racial equity, ethics and leadership. Through a series of discussions and assignments, you will have the opportunity to apply fundraising concepts, techniques and questions to a specific nonprofit organization and build inclusive and equitable fundraising practices. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

• Foster and support a culture of philanthropy across an organization and its constituencies.   
• Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and effective fundraising strategies, practices, and frameworks, including opportunities and risks associated with each prospective channel.   
• Conduct an audit of an existing fundraising program to identify opportunities, resolve problems, and inform future planning.   
• Design fundraising strategy that supports an organization’s strategic goals.

NPLR 5830: Leading Staff & Volunteers 

Seattle University's Master of Nonprofit Leadership is offering this three-credit course* to nonmatriculated students.

High-performance management of organizations and demands intensive development of human relations skills. Building these skills requires deep self-reflection on leaders’ identity and bias as well as an ability to critique existing systems and make change collaboratively to eliminate the impacts of bias, racism and other forces of oppression in their organizations. 

This course teaches essential leadership, management and team skills through a combination of readings, self-reflective techniques, group problem-solving, discussion and casework. 

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to: 

• Build and support diverse and inclusive teams of staff and volunteers.  
• Assess yourself, your organization and team for practices and biases that inhibit high-functioning, inclusive and diverse teams.  
• Understand trends and best practices in Human Resources and how to start building better, more equitable practices. 
• Develop reflective leadership skills and practices to position you to lead effectively through changing times.
