A lovely Advent mass, a visit from Santa, some refreshments and fun for all marked another successful Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Seattle U on Dec. 1. Shining brightly atop the university’s tree rests a glowing new addition to this year’s festivities. If you haven’t had a chance, take a closer look next time you’re in the lower mall plaza and you’ll see a tree topper with the SU logo glowing with crimson. What makes this piece even more special is that it was created here on campus in the Lemieux Library’s Billodue Makerspace!
Several weeks ago, Seattle University locksmith Wayne Holscher walked into the Billodue Makerspace to ask about the possibility of 3D printing a tree topper. With an overall vibe in the Billodue Makerspace of positivity, collaboration and a willingness to help––the response to Wayne was an emphatic “yes!”
With the help of Rachel Segrest, Billodue Makerspace Specialist, Wayne’s concept of a 3D tree topper was realized by laser cutting 2D shapes and assembling them into the crimson triangular prism you will see shining atop the university Christmas tree. “Everyone was nice and easy to talk to. I felt like I could ask them about anything, and they had great ideas for how to make it all happen. They also taught me along the way,” says Wayne.
If you’re interested in the Billodue Makerspace, learn more by stopping in to see the space for yourself on the 12th Avenue side of the Sinegal Center’s first floor. You can participate in a variety of maker-related activities including sewing, fiber arts, bike maintenance, 3D printing, laser cutting, electronics, vinyl cutting and glass work. The winter program schedule will be posted online and on their Instagram soon so make sure to follow them at the links below.
