SU Establishes Emergency Fund for Students and Families in Hawai'i

Posted: August 15, 2023

Dear Seattle University Community,

All of us at Seattle University are working to support our students and their families impacted by the wildfires burning in several areas across the Hawaiian Islands, with Western Maui experiencing particularly devastating impacts.

The scale of destruction and displacement caused by the fires is truly heart-wrenching for all who call the Hawaiian Islands home. Hawai’i is a very special part of the Seattle University community, with many of our students residing on the islands, including close to 100 who are planning to attend Seattle University for the first time this fall.

The aftermath of the wildfires has had innumerable impacts on our students and families from Hawai’i, and we have an opportunity to directly support those affected. We have heard from many in our community who want to support the students impacted.

In response, Seattle University has established an Emergency Fund dedicated to helping students and their families. This fund offers vital support for housing, travel, basic necessities and academic resources—including tuition assistance and unforeseen out-of-pocket expenses—as our students navigate this difficult time.

100% of your contribution, no matter the size, will go directly to students in need and will make a tangible and immediate impact on the lives of those struggling right now. Together, we can alleviate some of the burdens that these students and families are facing.

Give today.

Thank you for your generosity and support during this challenging time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at deanofstudents@seattleu.edu.

Sincerely,

James Willette, Ph.D.
Associate Provost & Dean of Students
