Update from the Know and Use Student Pronouns and Chosen Name Goal 3 Working Group
Posted: June 28, 2023
Seattle University is enhancing inclusivity by ensuring proper use of students' chosen names and pronouns.
This summer, the university is launching a system for students to indicate how to address them in university communications, e-mail, Canvas and other areas. Legal names will still be used for official documents. Once active, continuing students can update their information via mySeattleU. The system will be integrated into the admissions process for new students.
This initiative opens possibilities for wider community inclusion, allowing faculty and staff to also update their chosen names. All continuing and incoming students received an update about these enhancements from the Office of the Dean of Students in late June. Students will receive a follow-up communication in August with specific instructions about how to make changes in the system.
