The Seattle University student body is not homogeneous, and yet we often do not recognize social class identity as part of our students’ (and our own!) experience. Join Student Academic Persistence for Starting the Conversation: Social Class Identity at Seattle U, a timely and eye-opening learning and development opportunity for us to critically examine social class identity and inclusivity at Seattle U. We will engage in personal reflection and empower group learning to develop language around social class and increase confidence in engaging with students on matters of class and status.
We will be invited into this conversation by Dr. Sonja Ardoin, a scholar-practitioner of higher education who studies social class identity, college access and success for rural and first-generation college students, student and women’s leadership, and career preparation and pathways in higher education and student affairs. Join this virtual learning experience that will set us on a path to walk more closely alongside students from poor- and working-class backgrounds who experience higher education uniquely from their middle- or upper-class peers.
The first 50 participants to RSVP will also receive a free copy of Ardoin and Martinez's (2019) Straddling Class in the Academy: 26 Stories of Students, Administrators, and Faculty from Poor and Working-Class Backgrounds and their Compelling Lessons for Higher Education Policy and Practice.
