Neighborhood Community Service Event: Restoration at Frink Park

When: Saturday, May 6, 2017      Time: 10:00AM-2:00PM
Where: Frink Park, 480 Lake Washington Boulevard South, Seattle, WA 98144
Description: Join SU’s CEJS, SU Outdoor Recreation, and Earth Corps in an effort to protect open spaces. Help out at Frink Park by removing English ivy, an invasive plant that covers trees and results in a loss of native habitat. 20 spots are reserved for SU community, friends, and relatives. See here for a fun video on what to expect! Learn More and Register Here! ECOCHALLENGE

Description: Have fun, care for the planet and our communities, and win great prizes! Celebrate Earth Month and participate in SU’s 4th annual EcoChallenge! The EcoChallenge is a fun 3-week event encouraging participants to make small lifestyle changes that contribute to a world of impact! The event is open to SU students, faculty, staff, and alumni. You can participate as an individual or as a team. This year's theme is "Belongings and Belonging." For 3 weeks you will be challenged to reflect on your consumption and its connection to our communities, locally and globally. 25$ worth of gifts from local businesses and SU sponsors will be awarded each week to the highest scoring participants. Learn more and Register
 

CEJS Spring Brown Bag Lunch - Faculty Fellows Research Presentation

Description: Join us as CEJS Faculty Fellows Dr. Quan Le; Associate Professor, Department of Economics at Albers School of Business and Economics, and Dr. Shiny Abraham; Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering present their research. Dr. Le will discuss the collaboration of Seattle University and Nicaraguan smallholder cooperatives in bringing the Fair Trade and Organic Coffee Café Ambiental  to campus and the broader community. Dr. Abraham’s talk will focus on the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to build and deploy smart, connected sensors that provide continuous monitoring of air, water, and soil quality. March for Science

Where: We will meet at SU's library plaza and walk together to the start of the March at the Cal Anderson park.
Description: SU students, faculty and staff: Take part in the global “March for Science” organized by the Earth Day Network. SU participants will meet at SU's library plaza, walk over to the Cal Anderson Park, and participate in the march to support science that upholds the common good and encourages leaders to create evidence-backed policy reflecting the public interest. Get connected with our community’s marchers on Facebook and read more about the event here. Seattle U Interfaith Earth Day Fair

Take action at the Action Center (STCN160) and meet campus and off-campus Earth Justice organizations; Enjoy live music brought to you by KXSU and SU student performers; partake in a Mindfulness Meditation session; and participate in Interfaith Earth Justice conversations (STCN Hearth). The event is sponsored by Seattle University's School of Theology & Ministry, Campus Ministry, Earth Ministry, Washington Interfaith Power and Light, Eco Sangha, KXSU, and the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability.

Community Recycles Day

Description: Clean out your closets and bring in your recyclable and reusable items (appliances, batteries, electronics, clothes, plastic bags, packaging,...) to the SU flagpole for a FREE pick-up by SU's Recycling. This event is open to the community! 

Built with Our Bare Hands: Concert and Art Exhibit

When: March 2, 2017
Where: Optimism Brewery
Description: Support Barefoot College in India by enjoying live music, great art, and listening to guest speaker Kim Corrigan! Corrigan worked in India on K12 education and with global issues in 2009 when she connected with Barefoot College. The school emphasizes women and sustainability by teaching them how to build solar panels! This benefit event is run by SU students and will support various clubs on campus and help with sending students Raenna Pittman and Caitlin Mitchell to help implement projects in India. Acting to Reverse Climate Change

Description: Michael Foster, a local climate activist who put his freedom on the line to shut down an Alberta tar sands oil pipeline in an effort to raise awareness about this the effects of climate change, will be presenting some recent scientific findings that have prompted his actions, and suggest ways for people to get involved.


CEJS Brown Bag Lunch with Cynthia Figge: Measuring Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Across Business

Washington Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WAHESC)

Description: CEJS is a proud sponsor of this year's Washington Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WAHESC). WAHESC is a regionally-focused opportunity for those teaching, working, or studying within higher education to come together and learn about sustainability in academics, operations, and research. Participants will explore ways to advance campus sustainability through the sharing of best practices, presentations on creative solutions to common challenges, and the development of regional collaborative networks. The template for submitting a proposal is here. Proposal deadline is October 14th, and selection decisions will be made by November 4th

Garbology

When: February 8, 2017 Time: 9 AM-2 PM
Where: In front of Lemieux Library
Description: Volunteer at Garbology, the Recyclemania kick-off event: waste will be collected from all over campus and brought to the plaza in front of the library. Volunteers will be tabling for waste reduction, encouraging people to take the RecycleManiac pledge, and sorting recyclables/compostables from our waste stream.

RecycleMania!

When: Feb 5-April 1, 2017
Description: SU is competing in RecycleMania, a friendly competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste and improve waste diversion on campus. SU will participate for the first time this year and we have a grand goal: Divert 80% of our Waste! Faculty, staff, and students: What can you do to support SU to reach its goal and win Recyclemania 2017?:

  • Take the RecycleManiac Pledge and be entered to win a gift card.
  • Start collecting clothes, office supplies, appliances, books, batteries, plastic bags, packaging material, and other goods: bring your items to Campus on March 29 for SU’s Community Recycles Day.
  • Spread the word: distribute the Recyclemania flyer and RecycleManiac Pledge among SU students and colleagues.

Dr. Zamora will present her research on Corporate Social Responsibly (CSR) and investor judgment. Dr. Pierce will discuss his survey of the knowledge, behavior, beliefs and attitudes in the U.S. towards climate change.

Recycling Energy

These buildings are equipped with a system to harvest and recycle energy, and are linked common thermal network to reduce both energy consumption and its carbon footprint. FOOD DAY: Plant-based Protein Cooking Class for SU students

Description: SU students: Join Bon Appetit executive chef Christine Keff and sustainability fellow Caroline Ferguson, the  Health and Wellness CrewCEJS, and the Health and Wellness Learning Community for a FREE cooking class. In honor of National Food Day we will be learning recipes and techniques for cooking with plant-based proteins like beans, tofu, lentils, nuts, and whole grains. These are nutritional powerhouses with a much smaller footprint than meat. While we enjoy Chef Keff's dishes, we'll learn about the nutritional value of plant-based proteins and how we can make dietary choices that are gentle on the planet.

Description: Kevin Wilhelm, author of Making Sustainability Stick, will discuss how faculty can integrate sustainability into their courses and across disciplines. He will explore how discrete online modules can complement coursework in a way that is practical for faculty and transformational for students.
