Description: The 2018 Special Olympic USA Games will be hosted in Seattle, making this the biggest sporting event to hit the Seattle area in more than 25 years. Seattle University is one of the SOUSA venues and will welcome 260 athletes, 1,000 family members, and 2,000 spectators to campus for the Games. The Special Olympic's sustainability team has the ambitious goal of making this the first Carbon Neutral Special Olympics USA Games! Inspired by Pope Francis’ critiques of technology and calls for a “bold cultural revolution” in Laudato Si’, this paper argues that environmental injustices issue from a dynamic between technologies of power and the powers of technology. The paper puts Laudato Si’ into dialogue with Peter Sloterdijk’s account of Ignatian anthropotechnics and Giorgio Agamben’s thoughts on Franciscan forms of life so as to sketch a vision of an eco-politics guided by contemplation.
Laudato Si’ and Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness

This project brings Laudato Si’ into dialogue with Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) program. The GNH concept implies that sustainable development should take a holistic approach towards notions of progress and give equal importance to non-economic aspects of wellbeing.

Machlis served as Science Advisor to the Director, National Park Service in the Obama administration, and is currently University Professor of Environmental Sustainability at Clemson University. Dr. Machlis received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle, and his Ph.D. in human ecology from Yale. He will be discussing his new book The Future of Conservation in America: A Chart for Rough Water, recently published by the University of Chicago Press. Written with Jon Jarvis, the eighteenth director of the National Park Service, this book examines the current state of American conservation, and proposes practical and effective steps to advance conservation in the future. Items accepted include: appliances, batteries, books, clothing, confidential papers (will be shredded), compact fluorescent light bulbs, electronics and accessories, machinery, office supplies, packaging material, plastic grocery bags, printer toner cartridges, Styrofoam blocks and peanuts (bagged or boxed), and (empty) tanks or spray cans. Please do not bring any chemicals, mattresses, or furniture. Staff and volunteers will help unload heavy items. Hard drives and other storage devices will be wiped through a secure data destruction program.

Join the SU Facilities team this year for the 2018 Great Backyard Bird Count around SU Campus! 2018 celebrates the centennial of the passage of the Migratory Bird Treat Act of 1918 which completed an agreement to end the hunting of nongame birds in the U.S. and Canada. This act influenced international prohibition to pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, or sell most species of North American native birds. In 1936 the U.S. passed a similar act with Mexico. Today these agreements ensure that wild birds warrant full protection under the law across North America. Chasing Coral is a highly acclaimed film illustrating the existential threat facing coral reefs around the world. The visually stunning documentary also provides a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges the film crew faced in attempting to capture mysteries of the underwater world. The screening will be followed by a multidisciplinary panel discussion including Seattle University faculty and a guest speaker from the Seattle Aquarium. And...
