Description: The Central Puget Sound Chapter of the Washington Native Plant Society has formed a partnership with Seattle University Grounds. The partnership is focused on learning from and caring for the Vi Hilbert Ethnobotanical Garden on the SU campus. Join us on Friday, April 6th, from 10am to 1pm: we will be removing invasive plants and planting native plants. CEJS is calling on YOU to create designs for printable signage that will be distributed within SU campus res halls. Interested? Presented by JESSICA IMANAKA, Associate Professor in the Albers School of Business and Economics
Inspired by Pope Francis’ critiques of technology and calls for a “bold cultural revolution” in Laudato Si’, this paper argues that environmental injustices issue from a dynamic between technologies of power and the powers of technology. The paper puts Laudato Si’ into dialogue with Peter Sloterdijk’s account of Ignatian anthropotechnics and Giorgio Agamben’s thoughts on Franciscan forms of life so as to sketch a vision of an eco-politics guided by contemplation.
Laudato Si’ and Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness

This project brings Laudato Si’ into dialogue with Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) program. The GNH concept implies that sustainable development should take a holistic approach towards notions of progress and give equal importance to non-economic aspects of wellbeing.

Description: Join us for this important dialogue about conservation, the environmental sciences, and America’s future. Dr. Gary E. Machlis served as Science Advisor to the Director, National Park Service in the Obama administration, and is currently University Professor of Environmental Sustainability at Clemson University. Dr. Machlis received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle, and his Ph.D. in human ecology from Yale. He will be discussing his new book The Future of Conservation in America: A Chart for Rough Water, recently published by the University of Chicago Press. Written with Jon Jarvis, the eighteenth director of the National Park Service, this book examines the current state of American conservation, and proposes practical and effective steps to advance conservation in the future.
