My greetings to each of you as we head into the homestretch of the 2018-2019 academic year here at Seattle University. Our School of Law has already celebrated its Commencement and the other members of the Class of 2019 will follow suit when we hold our undergraduate and graduate ceremonies on June 16. It promises to be a wonderful day made all the more special by our honorary doctorate recipients: Sister Helen Prejean, author of the book Dead Man Walking; James Martin, S.J., a nationally acclaimed author and speaker; and José Alberto “Chepe” Idiaquez, S.J., president of the Universidad Centroamericana, our sister Jesuit university in Managua, which continues to deal with violence arising from a crackdown by the Nicaraguan government that began last spring. Sister Prejean, Father Martin and Father Chepe are paragons of justice. It will be a great blessing to have them with us for Commencement.

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Paulette Kidder is the 2019-2020 recipient of the James B. McGoldrick, S.J., Fellowship. Named for a beloved Jesuit who devoted a half century of his life to Seattle University, the fellowship recognizes an extraordinary faculty member who embodies the mission and values of our institution. The McGoldrick Fellowship, the most prestigious award we confer upon our faculty, includes a quarter or semester sabbatical, and Dr. Kidder is a most deserving recipient.

Last week, federal prosecutors charged 50 individuals in connection with a scheme to influence admission decisions through cheating, bribery and providing false information in applications to eight universities. Among the charges, the indictments allege The Key Worldwide, a college preparation firm at the center of the scandal, bribed at least nine coaches and one athletic official in exchange for admitting students as athletic recruits to the institutions.

I have heard from trustees and many in our community how shaken you were by the report from the Pennsylvania Grand Jury on sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests over a 70-year period and the failure to prevent, including the cover-ups, these horrendous crimes by bishops and others. Seattle University joins with others in the Seattle community and beyond in mourning and remembering with deep gratitude Archbishop Emeritus Raymond G. Hunthausen, who passed away Sunday at the age of 96. Archbishop Hunthausen had an outsized impact on our region and nation. Soon after being named bishop of his home Diocese of Helena, Montana, in 1962, he traveled to Rome for the Second Vatican Council. He was one of the youngest bishops to participate in the Council, and the experience profoundly influenced and shaped him and the kind of leader he would become.

Over the holiday break, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) formally disclaimed any interest in further representing our non-tenure-track and part-time faculty. In response to this formal disclaimer, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) revoked the SEIU’s certification as the collective-bargaining representative. Finally, on Friday, January 5, the NLRB allowed the SEIU to withdraw its previously filed Unfair Labor Practice charge and dismissed its Unfair Labor Practice complaint against the university. With that, the four-year-old legal dispute between the SEIU and the university is now finished.

The House of Representatives recently passed its version of tax reform legislation and the full Senate is set to begin debating its version this week. Should the Senate legislation pass, the House and Senate will need to resolve their differences before a final bill is approved.

For me, the fall academic term at Seattle University has been filled with many blessings and graces. I was humbled to be honored for my 20 years as president at our Gala last month. Having my family there and being surrounded by my Jesuit brothers and so many great alumni and friends of Seattle U was a moment I will always treasure. I consider it a sacred privilege to lead this university and with students at the center of everything I strive to do and to be about as president, it was gratifying that this year’s Gala brought in a record-setting level of support for student scholarships. I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees earlier today approved the appointment of Natasha Martin, JD, as Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion. For the past year Natasha has been serving in the chief diversity officer role as an associate vice president. In this newly appointed VP role, she will serve full-time as a member of my Cabinet and report directly to me. Her new appointment will allow the university to better align diversity and inclusive excellence with the university’s strategic priorities and allow us to make a greater impact on the initiatives called forth by this commitment.

The death this week of Costco co-founder Jeff Brotman was sad news for our Seattle University community and city, and for me personally. Few people have made as significant an impact on our university as Jeff Brotman.

I want to share my personal views with you on climate change and divestment. I am deeply disappointed and concerned with President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord. I have joined other university, business and elected leaders in reaffirming a commitment to our climate goals. I also want to express my personal support for divestment from fossil fuels and continuing to explore how we can do so responsibly. Climate change is a defining issue for our students’ generation and their future. I stand with all who are committed to addressing it with a sense of urgency. Seattle University has made significant progress in recent years through our operations and programming to do our part, including the work of the President’s Committee for Sustainability (PCS) in implementing our Climate Action Plan.

I am pleased to announce that Sherman Alexie and Maggy Barankitse will speak at our undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies, respectively. Both individuals are voices for the marginalized and dispossessed and both are considered friends of our university. It will be wonderful to welcome them back to Seattle University for our commencement at KeyArena on June 11.

As I reflect on the winter months at Seattle University, I do so with a deep sense of gratitude and humility after being reappointed by the Board of Trustees on Feb. 23 to a new five-year term. Many of you have made it possible for us to accomplish so much over the past 20 years and I am forever indebted. I also greatly appreciate the alumni, faculty and staff who took part in the review of my presidency and offered insights into how we can best move forward in the years ahead. I know we have much work to do as we chart the university’s future course together.

After meeting with members of the search committee and giving careful consideration to evaluations from our faculty, staff and students, I have decided not to offer the position of provost to either of our current candidates. While both finalists are excellent individuals with strong, relevant experience, I believe we are faced with a unique set of challenges and opportunities that demand we select an exceptional leader with a clear and compelling vision for our university and its academic programs and initiatives. We intend to reopen the search in late summer and interview final candidates on campus in the fall.

Father Mike Kelliher, S.J., a dedicated and longstanding faculty member, passed away on Thanksgiving morning. Fr. Kelliher had been living at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, Calif., following his retirement from Seattle University in 2012.
